BLACKSBURG, Va. — One person was killed and four others were wounded during a shooting at a hookah bar in downtown Blacksburg late Friday night.
Among those hospitalized is a student at Virginia Tech, according to VT President Tim Sands. “Our condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased and we extend our support to those who were injured,” Sands said in a statement. “Events like this are difficult and unsettling to all of us. Please care for yourself and seek assistance if you need it.”
No condition information was available on any of the victims Saturday morning.
The Blacksburg Police Department said officers responded to reports of shots fired at Melody Hookah Lounge on N. Main St. in downtown Blacksburg just before midnight Friday.
The downtown business district was cordoned off and traffic stopped as police investigated the shootings. North Main Street has since reopened.
Police did not identify the deceased person or any of the people who were injured in the shooting. Authorities said they were taken to local hospitals, but that their conditions are unknown.
No additional information was made available, including details on potential suspects or a motive.
Nearby, Virginia Tech was encouraging students to stay indoors, but has since lifted the request, the university said in a post on Twitter.
