Icy Road conditions contributed to dozens of accidents Monday morning, including a fatal crash in Halifax County.
Ringgold Volunteer Fire Chief Mike Neal says his department responded just after 5 a.m. to a fatal accident near Leggett’s Bottom on Rt. 58.
Virginia State Police said the crash occurred at 4:40 a.m. in the 17,000 block of Philpott Rd/Route 58.
47-year-old Braxton L. Brooks of Cumberland, Va. was driving a Mercury Grand Marquis on Route 58 when he came across icy roads. Brooks’ vehicle ran off the left side of the road and into the median where it hit a tree. He died at the scene.
Another accident was reported in the 7000 block of Highway 58. Two people were transported to the emergency room following the rollover wreck. Another person was injured in an accident on the Milton Highway, along with a wreck in the 3600 block of the South Boston Road. There were no injuries in that single-vehicle collision.
Another vehicle careened down an embankment after the driver lost control on Rt. 58 about 8:30 a.m.
Numerous accidents have been reported just across the border in Pelham and Yanceyville, N.C.
The Danville Expressway was described as “an icy mess,” with lots of freezing along bridges and overpasses. Traffic was moving slowly but there have been a number of accidents. One person was transported to the hospital after hitting an icy patch and crashing at Rt. 58 and the bypass.
Danville Public Works Crews are sanding and salting the roads.
Slick road conditions contributed to a multi-vehicle accident along Route 86 South of Yanceyville, where several vehicles overturned. As of early Monday morning, traffic had been reduced to one lane.
Schools in Danville, Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties are closed Monday.
