A pipeline that would stretch from West Virginia to Pittsylvania County now faces an uncertain future.

Faced with cost overruns and mounting legal challenges, the company developing the Mountain Valley Pipeline has told investors that there is no timeline for completion of the 303-mile project.

However, developers of the natural gas pipeline say they are not giving up. Mountain Valley had hoped to complete the stalled project by the summer of 2023, but now concedes that will not happen.

In a conference call with investors, Equitrans Midstream CEO Tom Karam said the company will release more details after discussions with government agencies responsible for permitting the pipeline and its partners.

Legislative hurdles remain. Virginia’s Air Pollution Control Board has denied a key permit for a compressor station to support the Southgate extension and North Carolina has twice denied a necessary water permit for the pipeline.
