Amtrak has cancelled all long distance train trips beginning on Thursday according to the Washington Post. The decision comes in anticipation of a potential freight rail worker strike that could begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday.
The strike would affect hundreds of thousands of rail customers. Somewhere between 24 and 28 daily trains will be shutdown during the stoppage. Most of Amtrak’s trains run on freight railroads, which will be affected by the possible strike.
The possible strike would involve private railroads for VRE trains, CSX and Norfolk Southern, and would stop all service. Unions have been trying to negotiate a new contract with the railroads because of issues that include pay and working conditions. WBTM reached out to Norfolk Southern in Danville for comment about the potential shutdown, but was told they couldn’t comment.
The Amtrak shutdown will affect customers trying to travel from the station in Danville. The Northeastern corridor between Boston and D.C. won’t be affected because Amtrak owns the railroads.
