Pending Board of Supervisors approval, Pittsylvania County is planning to increase water and sewer rates for the first time since 2013. These mostly minor increases will help Pittsylvania County Public Works maintain adequate financial reserves.

Pittsylvania County Public Works provides varying rates for water and sewer service in different areas of the County. The County has approximately 3500 customers. Pittsylvania County purchases water from several different area entities, including the Town of Chatham, the Town of Hurt, and the City of Danville.

Generally speaking, the majority of County customers will see increases in the range of 3%-4%.  Customers in our Chatham and Hurt areas will see larger increases due to increased bulk water costs the supplying towns charge the County. Connection and miscellaneous fees will also see a moderate increase.

The Board of Supervisors is hosting a public hearing regarding these changes during its January 17 Business Meeting. Anyone from the public can attend and speak to the Board for three minutes during the meeting.

Below are all the proposed rate increases.

Danville Service Area (Mount Hermon, Route 29 North, Route 58 West, Ringgold, Mount Cross, and Old Richmond Road)

Water Rates

• Current: $46 every two months base bill (includes 8,000 gallons allowance) and $7.00 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.
• Proposed: $47.50 every two months base bill (includes 8,000 gallons allowance) and $7.25 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.

Sewer Rates

• Current: $50 every two months base bill (includes 10,000 gallons allowance) and $6.00 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.
• Proposed: $52.00 every two months base bill (includes 10,000 gallons allowance) and $6.25 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.

Chatham Service Area (Tightsqueeze, Hwy. 29 South of Chatham, and Dry Fork Area)

Water Rates

• Current: $46 every two months base bill (includes 8,000 gallons allowance) and $7.00 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.
• Proposed: $55.00 every two months base bill (includes 8,000 gallons allowance) and $7.25 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.

Sewer Rates

• Current: $46 every two months base bill (includes 8,000 gallons allowance) and $7.50 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.
• Proposed: $50.00 every two months base bill (includes 8,000 gallons allowance) and $8.00 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.

Well Systems (Wayside Subdivision #1, Wayside Subdivision #2, Robin Court, and Woodroam Subdivision

• Current: $46 every two months base bill (includes 8,000 gallons allowance) and $7.00 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.
• Proposed: $47.50 every two months base bill (includes 8,000 gallons allowance) and $7.25 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.

Hurt Service Area (Grit Road Area)

• Current: $68 every two months base bill (includes 8,000 gallons allowance) and $8.00 per 1,000 gallons of usage over the base allowance.
• Proposed: $25 minimum base bill (no allowance) and $15.00 per every 1,000 gallons used.

Vista Pointe Condos

• Current Water & Sewer Rate (combined): $92 every 2 months per residential equivalent
• Proposed Water & Sewer Rate (combined): $95 every 2 months per residential equivalent

Flat Rate Sewer Charge (applies to customers without a metered water connection)

• Current: $50 every 2 months
• Proposed: $60 every 2 months
