The Wendell Scott Foundation announced today that the Bubba Wallace Family and Richard Petty will be part of its annual Gala on Saturday, February 11 at the Charlotte Convention Center followed by a benefit concert held at NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, NC. The Wendell Scott Legacy Gala has funded thousands of dollars in programs and scholarships to youth from underserved and economically challenged communities.
The Gala will commemorate Wendell Scott’s first NASCAR victory and celebrate Black History Month. This year’s event will build upon years of success and efforts to instill the same values Wendell Scott showcased in area children’s hearts and minds.
On December 1, 1963, Wendell Scott broke the color barrier, becoming the first and only African American NASCAR driver to win a Grand National race, NASCAR’s highest level. The Wendell Scott Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization inspired by Wendell Scott Sr. and provides services such as job-skill training, STEM education opportunities, mentoring, and other supportive services to at-risk, underserved youth between the ages of 8 – 18 years in Danville, Virginia and surrounding areas.
The Gala is an inspiring and fun-filled evening to help raise funds for youth who are under-served and drive access to cultural and educational opportunities as well as the foundation’s programs,” said Warrick Scott, CEO. “The staff, board of directors, and many generous volunteers have been working hard to create this fantastic event. We invite the community to join us.”
Bubba Wallace’s Foundation Live 2 B Different is one of the Scholarship sponsors at the gala. The Petty Foundation is sponsoring our Valet and will have autographed memorabilia from Richard Petty to auction.
The Legacy Gala dinner has grown into the premier fundraising event for the foundation. Last year’s event attracted hundreds of guests from across the country. This year’s gala boasts a fantastic lineup of surprise guests, scholarship awards, and will be followed by a benefit concert by Grammy-nominated artist Bobby V. Boasting hits going back as far as 1996, such as “Blackberry Molasses” and fan favorites like “Slow Down”, the concert will be a star-studded event at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
The Gala’s fundraising efforts help support the Foundation’s educational programs, scholarships and other program services. Education programs are designed for students age 8 through 18, using resources and programs related to the STEM industry. In addition to the education programs, the Foundation’s outreach provides learning and mentoring opportunities to communities across the region.
