A Danville man got a big surprise while playing Powerball in April. Wayne Bosman thought he had won $50,000 playing Powerballand he was happy about it. However, Bosman made a mistake. He had actually won $150,000.

“I forgot about the Power Play!” he told Virginia Lottery officials as he claimed his prize.

It happened with a ticket he bought at Juniors Convenience Store at 2980 West Main Street in Danville for the April 19 drawing. His ticket, one of three he bought that day, matched four winning numbers plus the Powerball number, which would normally win $50,000. However, he spent an extra dollar for Power Play when he bought the ticket. Power Play tripled his prize to $150,000.

The winning numbers were 4-11-21-38-64, and the Powerball number was 11.

Bosman, who is retired from the U. S. Army, said he intends to use his winnings to pay bills and maybe take a vacation.

Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. Mr. Bosman lives in Danville, which received more than $8.8 million in Lottery funds for K-12 education last fiscal year. In Fiscal Year 2022, the Lottery raised more than $779 million for K-12 education, making up approximately 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 school budget.
