The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development is looking for feedback from state residents about their access to broadband services. The statewide Digital Opportunity Survey is to provide data to supplement the development of the Virginia Digital Opportunity Plan.
The survey aims to understand where respondents reside within the Commonwealth and their
1. Current levels of broadband access;
2. The affordability of the broadband services; and
3. Their level of comfort navigating the internet and digital devices.
All Virginians are encouraged to take the survey. The Virginia Digital Opportunity Plan will enable the Commonwealth to apply for federal broadband funding from the Digital Equity Act Capacity Grant program.
These funds will be used to support efforts to address the affordability of internet services, increase digital literacy programming and resources aimed at increasing digital adoption, and launch unique programs that address the digital divide.

I’m in need of housing.
Our page county board of supervisors agreed to devote something on the order of seven or $8 million towards a program by AllPoints to provide fiber optic high-speed Internet to most residences in our county. However, a significant number of residences, including ours are carved out of that, and the only available Internet services for us are provided through a DSL connection at a miserable speed of up to (and typically lower than) 1.5 MB per second. Our current provider, Bright Speed, has no concrete plans to improve that so like many other rural residents, we are left in the dust.
