Last night Danville City Council voted against a proposed Airbnb on College Avenue. The house at 162 College Ave was requesting to use three of the four bedrooms in the house for short term rentals. The applicant had said he plans to live in Danville for two years
The council heard from several residents last night that spoke against the proposed Airbnb citing safety and parking concerns. Councilman Lee Vogler discussed why he couldn’t vote for the special use permit.
“My concern also not just with the here and now and what would happen in the two years that he’s here, but in the two years after that if he’s gone you’re going to have a full blown Airbnb in that neighborhood that doesn’t have any kind of local connection or oversight whatsoever. I’m not anti-Airbnb, but I think they have to be in the right location with the right circumstance and spacing,” said Vogler.
The council did approve five other special use permits, four of them for short term rentals. The fifth was for a large new apartment complex for the city. The complex will be located on Stewart and Aiken Streets and have 195 units along with 1.5 parking spaces per unit. The current plan is for the complex to open in the second quarter of 2025.
