The Danville Planning commission recently approved a special use permit for the construction of apartments and townhomes near the river district. CCKW, LLC is planning to build 60 apartments and 30 townhomes along Monument, Shelton, Cabell, Beauregard, and Franklin Streets.

The apartments will be in three buildings and the townhomes will be located at four sites. Most of the apartments will be two bedroom units and all of the townhomes will be three bedrooms.

For apartments all of the parking would be off street and be in the back of the building.

The project includes properties that are already owned by the Dan River housing authority or a company affiliated with CCKW.

The company plans to have appropriate landscape buffers for neighboring properties.

The project hopes to be completed by mid 2025 with construction hoping to begin in early 2024. The project will be voted on by Danville City Council on December 5.

The planning commission has also voted to approve a zoning ordinance that would cap the number of short term rentals in the city. The commission voted to limit the amount of short term rentals like Airbnb or Vrbo to 150 for the city.

150 was determined as the number because it is one percent of the single family residential dwellings in the city. The motion has been suggested due to the current housing shortage in Danville and concerns that many homes are being converted to short term rentals.

The planning commission says there are currently 109 short term rentals operating in Danville. The proposal will be voted on by the city council at a future meeting.
