An inmate at the Danville Adult Detention Center died early on Sunday morning. 45-year-old Scott McCoy was found unresponsive in his cell at 4:45 am.

Adult Detention officers began life savings measures. The Danville Life Saving Crew responded and transported the inmate to Sovah Health where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Danville Police Department Interim Chief Chris Wiles has requested that the Virginia State Police conduct an independent investigation into the death. A review of the incident will also be conducted by the Virginia Department of Corrections.
