The Southern Virginia Megasite at Berry Hill is considered the top contender for lithium-ion battery manufacturing project, according to Virginia Business. The publication reports that Tennessee-based company, Microporous, is in negotiations to bring the project to the site in Pittsylvania County.

Virginia Business says the project could be a $1 billion investment that would bring about 1,500 jobs to the region.

“I think it’s a win for my company. I think it’s a win for Virginia and the potential employees there,” Microporous CEO John Reeves told Virginia Business in an interview Tuesday, adding that the project is also a “huge winner for the United States as well.”

Danville-Pittsylvania Regional Industrial Facility Authority Chairman Lee Vogler issued a statement to WBTM and WAKG on the report.

“While we have several active prospects for the mega site at various stages in the recruitment process, we do not have anything we can publicly announce at this time,” said Vogler.

Microporous has locations currently in Piney Flats, Tennessee and Feistritz, Austria. The company has been in business for over 80 years and has produced separators for lead-acid batteries.
