The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors has voted to request help from the state with funding a new jail. The board of supervisors saw a presentation of what the new jail may look like.
The new jail would sit on about 15 acres of land off of 29 across from Chatham Middle School. The new facility is expected to be 98,000 square feet and have 146 beds with the ability to expand to 202 beds.
The total cost of the facility is currently expected to be just under $63 million. The request to the state if approved would cover about 25% of the cost.
In 2025 the State Department of Corrections will determine if they’ll cover that 25%.
