The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Pittsylvania County on Thursday night. The tornado touched down in Swansonville and was an EF-1 with winds between 100 and 107 mph. The tornado was on the ground for a little over a mile and was 250 yards in width.
Numerous large softwood and hardwood trees were snapped or uprooted, with large branches broken. Damaged trees were noted on both sides of Strawberry Creek Lane, and several trees had fallen across the road. Many trees had also been snapped and uprooted in a densely wooded area adjacent to Strawberry Creek Lane.
