Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares was at the Danville Police Department on Tuesday to discuss Operation Ceasefire. Danville and Martinsville were among 13 cities across the state that participated in the operation.
During the first year of Operation Ceasefire the 13 cities saw a 17% reduction in murders, a 10% decrease in rapes, and a 3% decrease in robberies. 155 cases have been prosecuted with 106 convictions and 41 pending trial due to Operation Ceasefire.
Over 10,000 illegal firearms have also been seized as a result.
Operation Ceasefire is a proven approach that is used to address violent crime among serious and repeat offenders. The initiative invests in gang prevention and supporting community policing in high crime areas.
