A 73-year-old North Carolina man drowned at Smith Mountain Lake on Saturday. At 7:40 pm, the Franklin County Communications Center received a 911 call to report a person who had fallen into the water at the Magnum Point Marina.

At the time of the call, the man had not resurfaced from the water. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area to search for the individual and located a body in the water. The victim was recovered from the water and pronounced deceased at the scene.

The victim has been identified as 73-year-old Stephen Sykes of Littleton, North Carolina. While the circumstances around this drowning appear to be from an accidental fall, the death investigation remains active.
