The Danville Area Humane Society in conjunction with the City of Danville are expanding their isolation area for puppies and kittens. This dedicated space will help to ensure the health and safety of not only those animals but the general pet populations.
Paulette Dean the director of the Danville Area Humane society said of the expansion, “This expansion will significantly enhance our ability to provide a safe and healthy environment for incoming puppies and kittens, protecting them and our existing shelter residents from potential illnesses. Only those litters who come without their nursing mothers will be in this room. Litters who come in with their mothers will be held in the already-existing quiet room.” After a period of isolation those pets will be ready for adoption or fostering.
Danville Public works will be overseeing the project and city manager Ken Larking said of the expansion, “This initiative reflects our commitment to the continuous improvement of animal care services in Danville, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for all animals in our care.”
On top of the adoption and fostering programs offered by DAHS, they also operate a spay/neuter assistance program which has helped sterilize roughly 50,000 animals in Danville and Pittsylvania County. The E. Stuart James Grant Charitable Trust aided in the expansion of that program in 1993.
The Board of Directors of the Danville Area Humane Society also committed an additional $25,000 to the sterilization of outside cats. Any pet owner who cares for cats on their property can reach out to the shelter for assistance.
