Work is underway at the Chatham Library to create a tiered area in the rear of the building for outdoor activities, movies and more. The tree clearing was completed by Tony Ray Cook Tree Services and the excavation work is being done by Johnson Landscaping.

The project is slated to be completed by the end of November, leaving the winter for the grass to come in before spring.
The $25,000 project is being funded by a Next Step Grant through the Danville Regional Foundation.
The three grassy tiers will be easily accessible by a grassy slope alongside the tiers. A platform will be constructed at the bottom level to allow for movie nights or performances.
“We are extremely excited to be able to expand our library services to include an outdoor area!”, said Library Director Rhonda Griffin.
Beth Marsh, Chatham Branch Manager, added, “The summer reading programs that we have offered in the past have been very limited due to the limited space. Movie nights, in particular, have been very popular, and very crowded. This area has created a space that can allow for a variety of programs for all of our patrons.”
