A winter storm warning will take effect at 1 p.m. today and remain in place until 7 a.m. Saturday. Here is the situation report at 12:30 p.m.:
• The National Weather Service’s confidence in heavy snow for Danville and the surrounding area has continued to increase. Four inches of snow is likely, with two inches on the low-end and five inches on the high end. Danville may see a wintry mix begin around 4 p.m., and then turn to snow in the evening. The snow rates could be heavy at times. Snow will be ending overnight.
• Temperatures will fall to 23 degrees overnight, but will warm up to 40 degrees with clearing skies on Saturday.
• Any citizen in need of shelter should call the non-emergency number of the Emergency Communications Center. That number is (434) 799-5111, option 8. The center will arrange to meet the need.
• Public Works Department crews will preposition salt trucks across the city at 3 p.m. to monitor street conditions and respond as needed. When snow accumulations reach more than one inch, crews will begin snow removal operations, beginning with the highest traffic volume streets. These crews will work 12-hour, round-the-clock shifts to plow snow, spread salt and sand, and remove fallen trees and limbs that are blocking streets. When the snow event has ended and the main thoroughfares are plowed, crews then will move to streets that connect to primary routes and bus routes. The final stage will be residential neighborhoods. Generally, it takes 24 to 36 hours after the snow event has ended to plow all residential streets. We do not clear private streets and alleys.
• Utilities crews are on standby. Power outage information will be shared on the Danville Utilities outage map with updates posted to Danville Utilities Facebook page.
