Update: The Danville Fire Department reports that the fire was contained to one apartment in the 600 block of Main Street. The fire began in the kitchen of the apartment.
The fire has caused several residents to be displaced. Crews are currently working to restore power in the 600 block of Main Street.
The first arriving Engine was on scene within minutes and was told that the sprinkler system had been activated and there was smoke in the hallway. The call was quickly upgraded to a full response which included 2 additional Engines, a Tower Ladder, Safety Officer and Battalion Chief.
The fire had been quickly extinguished by Firestop dry chemical stove top extinguishers and the building’s sprinkler system. However, due to the sprinkler activation water damage occurred in the fire apartment, and the floors below including much of the building’s electrical systems.
The Danville Utility Department responded and initially shut down power to the block. Upon further investigation they deemed it safe to allow only part of the building to remain de-energized. The property manager is working to ensure that all of the building’s occupants have what they need during the power outage. At the time of this release the Utility Department is working with the Property Managers to ensure the power is restored safely.
