A company wanting to build a data center campus in Pittsylvania County has withdrawn the zoning request. In a press release from Calvert Street Group today Balico, LLC says they have withdrawn the rezoning application for a data center campus on 750 acres in the Chalk Level community.

The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors hearing for the project had been delayed and was scheduled for April 15 at Chatham High School. Balico was wanting to build a data center campus with 12 data centers, grouped in two clusters of six, as well as turbines that will initially generate 300 or more megawatts of gas-fired power to support the centers.

The company had previously said the investment would represent millions of dollars in annual tax revenue for the county as well as nearly 400 jobs.

Balico now says they are looking at other development possibilities for the land. Among the possibilities is a residential subdivision that would be a partnership with a national building company.

The current zoning for the land would allow for the construction of two residences per acre. The company says those discussions are still in the early stages.
