Several Pittsylvania County fire and rescue agencies responded to an early morning call June 5 about an ailing horse.

Eddie, a 33-year-old horse belonging to Laurie Lorette Allen of Gretna, was “cast” against the wall of the barn and could not stand up.

Allen called Gretna Fire and Rescue, who then reached out to the Hurt Fire Department, Blairs Fire and Rescue, and Pittsylvania County Public Safety.

The first responders also worked with a local veterinarian to make sure their plan was solid – which included the assistance of a small tow truck from Land’s Towing. The crew then placed slings under the horse and the tow truck was used to lift Eddie back up on his feet.
