South Boston Health and Rehab held a re-opening event last week after a fire severely damaged the facility over a year ago. The facility had been closed since a damaging fire on August 11, 2023 that caused 135 residents to be displaced.
The fire started in the electrical room. There were no injuries from the fire, but four residents had to be taken to hospitals for evaluation. The damage from the fire was estimated to be a multi-million-dollar loss.
The residents that were displaced by the fire are being given priority for admission at the re-opened facility. The facility can house 216 residents and features new nurses stations, lighting and flooring among other improvements.
