The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors approved a local emergency declaration during its October 15, 2024, business meeting for the F2 tornado that struck the Dry Fork and Callands communities.

The tornado formed from the remnants of Hurricane Helene and touched down during the early afternoon of September 27, 2024, causing dangerous conditions for residents, destruction of property as well as extensive cleanup efforts. The tornado spanned six miles between W.I. Powell, Dry Fork, Irish, Bearskin and North Flint Hill roads.

The local emergency declaration will remain in effect for six months beginning September 27, 2024.

The Board also approved a resolution honoring the County’s first responders who arrived on the scene in the immediate aftermath of this natural disaster. Dry Fork and Blairs fire and rescue, in collaboration with neighboring fire departments, demonstrated professionalism, courage and exemplary teamwork.

The quick action and bravery displayed by County volunteer firefighters and first responders in clearing debris and searching every house to prevent further damage ensured the safety of the residents and surrounding community.
