Updates to two water line projects were provided to the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors during its October 15, 2024, work session.
Pittsylvania County Public Works Director Chris Adcock told the Board that construction plans for the Robin Court water line project are complete and approved by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). The County was awarded a $905,000 grant from the Health Department and is now awaiting the results of an environmental assessment before the project can go out to bid.
The project will connect the subdivision to the County’s public water system, replacing a community well system built in the early 1970s and operated by the Pittsylvania County Service Authority, now the Department of Public Works, since the late 1970s.
The system has exceeded acceptable radium contaminant levels since 2019, and Pittsylvania County entered into a Consent Order with VDH to remedy the exceedances.
Once the project is complete, the existing well will be capped and abandoned.
The second project is a water line extension along R&L Smith Road, which was initially identified in the County’s 1991 water and sewer plan and included in the 2022 Water and Sewer Master Plan, according to Adcock.
The line will allow the County to support the Route 41 system that serves 1,600 customers, increase operational flexibility and water pressure in parts of the Mt. Hermon service area. It will also allow the County to merge the U.S. 29 North and Mt. Hermon service areas, allowing storage from the U.S. 29 area to be used by Mt. Hermon.
The new line will extend southwest from the Public Works office at 405 R&L Smith Road and tie-in with the existing line on Franklin Turnpike (Rt. 41). $250,000 has been budgeted in Fiscal Year 24-25 to cover the majority of the surveying and design of the project. Once design is complete, a construction estimate will be prepared and a construction funding plan developed.
