A local nonprofit is helping provide shelter to Hurricane Helene victims in Western North Carolina. Gretna based Campers Care has launched Cabins 4 Christ constructing emergency shelters for victims.

“We are basically building an 8×16 camper just not putting any wheels on it,” said Devin Taylor with Cabins 4 Christ, “we’re using the same technology you would have in an RV or a travel trailer just with a wooden structure and so we deliver them and put them on peoples property and give them to them.”

75 of the shelters are currently under construction and the first ones will be going to school employees and students in Buncombe County, North Carolina.

“They’ll be going back to school next week so we’re working with the school system to make sure the teachers and staff have a warm place to go back to school and they’ve identified the students within their population that need shelter so we are going to serve them next, so that they can have a place to do their homework. They have USB chargers so they can charge their devices and that way they can keep up,” said Taylor.

In total Cabins 4 Christ currently has a waiting list of 625 people or families that need shelters. On average the shelters cost about $5,000 to build.

Cabins 4 Christ is asking for donations to help with the shelters and volunteers.
