A man has been arrested for a homicide that occurred in Halifax County in 2017. The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office arrested 67-year-old Russell Wayne Layne on Wednesday for the murder Emma Compton Layne.

Russell Layne was married to Emma Layne, who was declared missing in June of 2017. Her body was found in the woods by hunters five months after she went missing.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Virginia State Police and the Halifax County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office with the investigation.

Russell Layne is being held without bond in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority awaiting arraignment. The investigation is ongoing, anyone with information is asked to contact the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office at 434-476-3339.
