A Danville man has been found guilty of attempting to kill his estranged wife in Eden. On December 9, a Rockingham County Jury found Donald Ray Newman guilty of attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon, with the intent to kill, and first degree burglary.
According to a release from the Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office, Newman broke into Angela Williams home in Eden on October 9, 2021. Once inside Newman pointed his gun at Williams and began assaulting her.
Newman then asked Williams where her gun was located. While Newman was retrieving the firearm, he shot Williams in the chest. Williams was then able to shoot Newman with her firearm and then ran to a neighbor’s house for help. Newman then fled the scene and later drove himself to a hospital in Virginia.
During the trial 18 witnesses were called and 173 exhibits were introduced. Senior Resident Superior Court Judge John Morris sentenced Newman to between 28 and 36 years and eight months in prison.
