A dog was rescued from an iced over Smith Mountain Lake on Tuesday night. According to Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire Rescue, crews responded at 5:30 pm to the area of Ponderosa Road in Franklin County.

Ice had formed on the lake and prevented boats from getting to the dog safely. The dog had fallen through the ice and had been in the water for about 30 minutes.

Crews determined that the quickest way to get to the dog was by sliding a kayak over the ice to get to him. The dog was about 800 feet from shore.

Another team was stationed at the end of Tall Tree Road to assist in case a boat launch was needed. After reaching the dog in the kayak, Chief Ohlerich was able to pull the dog from the water.
