(Roanoke, Va.) — The former director of the Pittsylvania County Department of Social Services has filed a $4 million lawsuit against the board of supervisors and two individuals.
Sherry Flanagan’s suit accuses the defendants of defamation, deprivation of constitutional due process, and wrongful termination predicated upon a violation of her First Amendment rights. Flanagan’s lawsuit also alleges that the defendants intentionally spread false and damaging information about her and her office and contends that she was retaliated against for engaging in protected speech.
Flanagan was fired by the county DSS board on Aug. 30, 2018. The suit maintains that prior to her termination, Flanagan was being harassed, both online and in public settings, by members of the board of supervisors.
The suit was filed in Roanoke City Circuit Court.
