HALIFAX COUNTY, VA — Dozens of trees were felled as strong winds roared through Halifax County Thursday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for portions of Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties around 2:30 p.m.

The heaviest damage was reported in the Virgilina community near the border of Virginia and North Carolina.

While no tornado has been confirmed, the winds uprooted large trees and left several communities without power. There were no injuries.

Thousands were left without just across the border in the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina.

Downed trees and widespread outages were reported Thursday in Rockingham, Guilford, Forsyth, Alamance, Yadkin, and Stokes counties.

Duke Energy reported more than 18,500 people were without power during the height of the storm. Strong wind gusts brought down trees across homes and roads.

WFMY-2 reports that In Greensboro, a utility pole fell across a home on Condor Drive. The homeowner said he saw a lightning strike and then suddenly rainwater started pouring into his house from the roof. He was able to escape the home without injury.

Trees also hit homes and cars in Chapel Hill and Rocky Mount.
