DANVILLE, VA — The parents of two-month-old Marleigh Chandler have been charged with murder in the infant’s drug-related death.

27-year-old Eugene Chandler Jr., and 26-year-old Shaleigh Brumfield have been indicted for felony homicide and abuse and neglect of a child.

Officers were on patrol on Maple Grove Avenue when they responded to a call for help on November 24, 2018.

Eugene Chandler was holding an unresponsive infant. Police administered CPR and the infant was taken to Sovah Health Danville, where she was pronounced dead.

While there were no signs of physical trauma, a death investigation was mounted. An autopsy revealed that the baby’s death was due to an ‘acute heroin and cocaine intoxication in a setting of co-sleeping.’

A later search of the home resulted in the discovery of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Police arrested both parents on Tuesday without incident, and they are being held in the Danville City Jail without bond.

The Danville Police Department worked closely with the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office in the investigation.
