PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA — A man who shot his father four times will spend the next forty years in prison.
Zachary Long was sentenced Monday for murder and firearms charges in the July 2018 shooting death of his father, David Long. Zachary Long pleaded guilty to the charges in April.
Family members testified that he had a history of drug abuse and mental illness. A friend told the court he was with the Longs on the day of the shooting and tried to perform CPR after the father had been shot twice. It was at this point that he said Zachary Long fired two more shots.
Long told the court he was sorry for his actions but offered no explanation for the murder, which the judge said was unprovoked.
In addition to the forty-year prison term, he was also placed on probation for five years following his release from prison.
