Danville, Va. — The Danville Fire Marshal says a house fire at 201 Briarwood Drive started in some unattended cooking.

Upon arrival, crews found a single-story brick home structure with heavy smoke showing from all sides. The lone occupant was outside and uninjured.

Crews entered the home and traced the fire to the kitchen, with flames extending into the attic. Firefighters were able to put out the flames with extensive damage to the kitchen and heavy smoke damage to the rest of the house.

Three engines, one ladder and two chief officers responded. Crews arrived at 7:38 p.m. and remained on scene for two and-a-half hours.

The Red Cross is providing shelter for the resident.
