WENTWORTH, N.C. – An Eden man who had been the object of a manhunt in two states has surrendered.

Police say 37-year-old Jesse Wayne Edwards turned himself in to the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office late Friday night.

Edwards is charged with kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon in a one-man crime spree that happened a week ago.

Sheriff investigators say he kidnapped a man at gunpoint in Ruffin and forced him to drive to a home in Eden, where he allegedly fired five shots from a rifle into the residence. A woman was struck in the leg and suffered a non-life threatening injury. Police say Edwards was mad after an argument that had occurred earlier at the address.

Edwards then ordered the man to drive to a bridge on NC 14. He got out there and was next seen a day later near Ridgeway in Henry County, where Sheriff Sam Page spotted Edwards walking alongside the road. When he attempted to stop him, Edwards fled into the woods. A day-long search followed but Edwards eluded capture.

He was placed in the Rockingham County Detention Center under a $3 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, July 30.
