Danville, Va. — Residents of Southside Virginia will have to endure one more day of steamy temperatures. The heatwave that has gripped the East Coast will ease Tuesday, and highs are expected to remain in the eighties for the rest of the week.

The East Coast sweated through another day of extreme heat and humidity Sunday as violent storms pounded portions of Virginia. In Lynchburg, downed trees were reported at more than two dozen locations, knocking out power and blocking roads Sunday evening. Lynchburg Public Works is bringing in extra linemen to restore power. Appalachian Power reported more than 17,500 outages at the height of the storm, primarily in Lynchburg, Roanoke and Amherst.

Elsewhere, organizers canceled a benefit run in Boston, Delaware Civil War re-enactors got the day off and the New York Police Department implored residents to take it easy.

The central part of the country, meanwhile, enjoyed some relief as a cold front moved steadily southward and eastward across the country, bringing down the temperatures.
