PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – Developers of the Mountain Valley Pipeline have voluntarily suspended work on a 75-mile stretch of the project, including Pittsylvania County. Work will be halted watersheds in the counties of Giles, Craig, Montgomery, Roanoke, Franklin, and Pittsylvania.
The Roanoke Times reports that the work suspension comes just three days after a lawsuit raised questions about the pipeline’s impact on endangered species.
A letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Mountain Valley said the suspension covers “new activities” that could pose a threat to the lives of endangered bats and fish, or potentially destroy their habitat.
It’s not clear how much of the 303-mile natural gas pipeline will be affected.
Earlier this month, problems with erosion and sediment control prompted the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to issue a stop-work order for a two-mile stretch of the pipeline in Montgomery County.
