KEELING, Va. – The Keeling man charged with murdering his mother, sister and nephew has been deemed incompetent to stand trial for the crimes, at least for now.
Matthew Bernard faces three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in the deaths of Joan Bernard, Emily Bivens and Cullen Bivens. The three were found dead at the Bernard’s Keeling Drive home on August 27. Matthew Bernard was arrested later that same day.
Recent court filings indicate Bernard was ruled incompetent to stand trial, but could be treated to restore his competency.
Bernard was scheduled to be transferred earlier to a mental health facility designated by the Commissioner of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
