DANVILLE, Va. – Danville is under a winter weather advisory until 10 p.m. Snow began falling in the city at 1:45 p.m. At 3 p.m., a heavier snow band began setting up along the VA/NC border. This band reduced visibility and coated surfaces (mainly grassy areas) with snow.
- The storm will move out of the area by 9 p.m. By that time, total snow amounts will be one to two inches, but accumulations will be much less, especially on street surfaces.
- Temperatures have fallen nearly 10 degrees since the snowfall began. Any citizen in need of shelter should call the non-emergency number for the Emergency Communications Center. That number is (434) 799-5111, option 8. The center will arrange to meet the need.
- Overnight temperatures will drop into the low 20s, causing snow, slush, and water to refreeze. The most hazardous travel conditions will be overnight into Friday morning.
- Public Works crews will be monitoring street conditions overnight and respond as needed. Crews today pretreated the major thoroughfares. Untreated streets, bridges, and sidewalks could become slick and hazardous.
- Residents and visitors should not travel overnight if possible. If you must travel, proceed with caution. Only the major thoroughfares have been pretreated. Remember that your car cannot start, stop or turn as quickly and surely on snow as it does on dry pavement, so think and drive accordingly, and be cautious driving and walking in parking lots.
- Danville power and light crews also are prepared for a response to any outages. Electric customers whose residence or business is without power should call Danville Utilities at (434) 773-8300 to report the outage.
- Currently, there are no reported power outages.
