RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced Wednesday that he would delay the June primary elections for Congress by two weeks because of the coronavirus.
Northam said the June 9 primary will instead take place on June 23.
There are no marquee primary elections in Virginia this year. The move will affect the Republican primary for U.S. Senate, though there are no well-known candidates looking to challenge Democratic incumbent Sen. Mark Warner.
Northam is also moving to delay local elections scheduled for May when Danville is set to choose five city council members and fill four seats on the school board.
Local elections scheduled for May will be pushed to November, pending action from the General Assembly, Northam said.
