FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. – The issue of whether to keep a Confederate monument outside the Franklin County Courthouse will be determined during the fall elections.

Supervisors have opted to let voters decide the statue’s fate through a non-binding referendum.

The issue drew both sides of the argument to Tuesday’s meeting of the Franklin County Board of Supervisors. In the end, members decided to let voters determine whether the monument of the Civil War soldier should be relocated. After the vote, it will be up to the board to decide the statue’s fate.

Some of the board members made it clear Tuesday night that while they support putting the matter to a vote, they do not believe the statue should be moved.

The referendum will be placed on the November ballot. The wording of the referendum has yet to be determined.
