HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. – The search for an elderly Halifax County woman ended Saturday with the discovery of her body in a wooded area near the family’s home.
84-year-old Mary Ann Stanley had been missing since Thursday. That’s when she was last seen at her Volens Road residence.
The search began Friday night. On Saturday, a volunteer and family friend found Mrs. Stanley’s remains on land across from the Stanley home.
The sheriff said that Stanley may have had early stages of dementia and Parkinson’s disease.
Stanley’s body has been taken to the Roanoke Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of her death, but officials say that they do not suspect foul play.
About 60 volunteers participated in the weekend search.
