HENRY COUNTY, Va. – The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is working to identify the man whose body was pulled from the Smith River in Fieldale Thursday.
A driver spotted the body floating face down in the river just after 11 a.m. at Daniels Creek. The caller followed the body until it was tangled in a tree along River Road. The body was recovered by an off-duty Patrick County Auxiliary Deputy and a swift-water rescue team.
The dead man is believed to be white wearing black sweat pants and a t-shirt. The sheriff’s office said the body had been in the river for more than 24 hours. How the man died and ended up in the river is unknown.
The body has been taken to the medical examiner for identification and an autopsy.
An empty car was found submerged in the water near the site where the body was found.
