DANVILLE, Va. – The Danville Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 428 Gay St. at 12:25 Monday afternoon.

Crews found a two story residential structure with heavy smoke coming from a rear basement door. The homeowner met firefighters and advised that everyone was outside and accounted for.

Crews entered the basement and found heavy smoke and fire. They brought the flames under control with a small amount of fire extending to the first floor. A second crew entered and extinguished the fire on the second floor.

Fire damage to the basement was heavy, and smoke damage to the first and second floors was extensive.

The fire was caused by an overloaded electrical circuit.

No injuries were reported. The Red Cross is assisting two  occupants who were displaced.

Three engines, one ladder, a safety officer, and a chief officer were on scene for two hours.
