DANVILLE, Va. – One precinct worker described the early voter turnout in Danville as “outstanding.” She said the morning was especially busy as a steady stream of voters cast ballots at Ward 2 (Swanson Studio) just before 9:30.
There were no lines but a good number of voters at Ward 3, the Langston Focus School.
Danville Registrar Peggy Petty said about 40% of the city’s 28,397 registered voters had cast ballots heading into Tuesday’s election. That’s twice the turnout recorded during the May city council race.
About 12,800 voters cast their ballots early or mailed in ballots. Just under 5,000 returned ballots by mail; another 7,800 voted early in person at the registrar’s office. Another 15% had turned out by noon on Election Day.
Danville residents are voting for president, House and Senate candidates, a three-way council race, and a referendum on a Caesar’s Entertainment casino-resort.
The polls opened at 6 am and close at 7:00 tonight.
