deputy-shot

WENTWORTH, N.C. — A Rockingham County sheriff’s deputy was shot Thursday night while responding to a domestic call.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office says two deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a home on Dover Circle just after 7 p.m. Thursday.

Rockingham County Sheriff’s Deputies Tyler Wiseman and Tyler Wray arrived at the home and were granted entry into the residence. After entering the home, Angel Galvin Silva, 44,  came from another room with a handgun tucked in his waistband. Silva’s wife grabbed the handgun in an apparent attempt to disarm him, at which point the gun went off, striking Wiseman in the lower leg.

Wray was able to secure the firearm and take Silva into custody, then rendered aid to Wiseman until medical personnel arrived on scene.

Wiseman was transported to a triad area hospital for treatment of his serious, but non-life-threatening injury.

Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assist in the investigation into the shooting. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the firearm’s discharge was not intentional.

Silva was not charged in the accidental shooting but was jailed on a charge of assault by pointing a firearm in connection to an earlier incident at the home. He was placed in the Rockingham County Detention Center under a $1,000 secured bond.

Investigators say three children under the age of 18 were in the home at the time of the incident but were not injured.
