ice-storm-4

DANVILLE, Va. – While snow, sleet and freezing rain fell over Danville during the night, the mixture had changed to rain by daybreak, leaving a slushy coating on residential streets.

At 8:30 Sunday morning, the main thoroughfares were all passable in Danville but slick spots remain in neighborhoods that were not pre-treated. The Public Works Department reports that main thoroughfares are wet, with slush in areas. Residential streets have an ice buildup from the sleet and freezing rain that fell overnight.

Danville received a burst of snow at 10 p.m. Saturday night that lasted for about an hour and covered the ground with snow. At around 4:30 a.m. today, a mix of sleet and freezing rain began to fall.

Public Works crews began spreading salt on the main thoroughfares. Crews will continue to monitor street conditions and place additional salt or sand as needed.

The Police Department has received reports of several single-vehicle vehicle accidents — one on Central Blvd. and another on Arnett – that were weather-related. Both accidents resulted in minor damage. Another along the Danville bypass was not weather-related.

There were no power outages as of 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
