DANVILLE, Va. – Temperatures remained above freezing in Danville for much of the night, making the winter storm a rain event for Southside Virginia.
The National Weather Service has the entire region under a Winter Weather Advisory through noon Friday, however, there was no icing on city streets during the early morning hours. But that wasn’t the case in other parts of Virginia. VDOT reports hazardous travel along I-81, Interstate 64 as well as many other secondary roads which remain covered with snow and ice.
Virginia State Police have all available troopers on patrol so they can respond to accidents, emergencies, and disabled motorists as quickly as possible during this winter storm.
The National Weather Service is calling for additional icing throughout the weekend, with rain and freezing rain in the Danville forecast each night through Monday.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect beginning Friday night and extending through Sunday morning.
But there were problems elsewhere. In Texas, police say six people were killed and at least 65 injured in a massive crash involving more than 130 vehicles on an icy interstate. The pileup on Interstate 35 near downtown Fort Worth happened as a winter storm is dropping freezing rain, sleet and snow on parts of the U.S.
In Tennessee, police responded to about 30 traffic collisions and some flights were delayed at Memphis International Airport after freezing rain and sleet fell.
In Kentucky, the governor declared a state of emergency to free up funding and help agencies coordinate as they respond to the storm. And in southern Indiana, schools and government offices closed.
