DANVILLE, Va. – The Danville fire marshal has determined that a morning fire at the Astoria Hotel North was set intentionally and police have charged Qwalon Montez Watlington with arson. He was arrested and is in custody

The Danville Fire Department responded to a call from 1030 Piney Forest Road – the Astoria Hotel North — at 6:25 am Thursday. No fire was visible from the two-story building, but crews investigated and found light smoke coming from room 22 on the first floor. A hand line was pulled and firefighters made entry into the room and found a mattress on fire and fire in the bath tub. The fire was quickly knocked down and the room was ventilated to remove smoke.

The room was occupied but no one was in the room at the time of the fire. The room sustained moderate smoke and heat damage.

The occupant was treated by the Danville Life Saving Crew on scene and transported to the emergency room.

16 firefighters were on scene for about 90 minutes.
