CANTON, Ohio – Police in Danville, Virginia say tips received locally led to the arrest of a robbery suspect after he fled to Ohio.

Investigators say that information helped them identify the pair and warrants were obtained for 33-year-old Aaron Thomas and 28-year-old Antonio Stanfield, both of Danville. Thomas is charged with robbery, felony assault, possession of firearm by a felon and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Stanfield remains at large but faces a robbery charge in the March 14 incident.

Danville Police officers assigned to the U.S. Marshal’s Capital Area Fugitive Task Force believed Thomas had fled to Ohio. They contacted members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force to help apprehend Thomas. Thomas and a federal agent were wounded in an exchange of gunfire in Canton, Ohio Wednesday evening. The officer is stable and is expected to be released from the hospital. Thomas is in critical condition.

Police say Thomas was tracked to a friend’s home in Canton. He was holed up inside the house and refused to surrender, yelling to police that he wanted them to kill him. He first attempted to flee through a second story window but later ran through the front door, firing at members of a SWAT team. The U’S. Marshal’s Service says a federal agent and Thomas were both wounded in the exchange of gunfire.

Thomas and Stanfield were being sought for an armed robbery and assault that happened at a motel on West Main Street earlier this month. The victim told Danville Police he was in his room having drinks with two men he didn’t know when one pulled a gun, struck him in the head and stole his cash and wallet. The pair then fled in a white Nissan with Virginia plates.

Both were identified through surveillance photos and Thomas was located in Ohio. Stanfield has yet to be found. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Danville Crime Stoppers at 434-793-0000.
